Home Remedies for Dandruff

Dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis is a regular scalp disease. It can take place because of dry skin, growth of bacteria and fungus on the scalp, extremely oily skin, inflammatory skin conditions and other such things. Dandruff is of two types– one takes place due to the dryness of the scalp, whereas as the other happens due to the extreme production of oil on the scalp. Common causes or contributing factors of dandruff are improper and irregular brushing of hair, less shampooing, poor diet, stress and certain illnesses like eczema, Parkinson’s disease, and seborrhea dermatitis

You can easily control dandruff by following a healthy hair care routine or applying natural home remedies. It is true that herbal natural remedies take time to show results ; but it can successfully cure the problem permanently. Below are mentioned some of the best home remedies for dandruff.

Neem

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of neem, also known as Indian lilac, helps in treating dandruff as well as many other hair problems like itchy scalp, scalp acne, and hair fall completely.

Boil some neem leaves for at least four cups of water.

Cool and strain the liquid.

Rinse hair with this neem water two or three times a week.

Coconut Oil

Due to antifungal properties of coconut oil helps in treating dandruff. Not only this, it also moisturizes dry scalp and provides relief from itchiness.

Take some coconut oil and mix half the amount of lemon juice in it

Massage with this oil on your scalp for a few minutes

Rinse your hair after at least 20 minutes. Repeat this remedy two to three times a in a week for better result.

Lemon Juice

Lemon is not just good for the body; but good for the hair as well. Lemon contains acids that fight the fungi which in result give dandruff. Moreover, it also helps relieve in itching on the scalp.

Take juice of half a lemon and mix it in one-quarter cup of plain yogurt. Now apply it on your hair and scalp. Wait for at least 20 minutes before shampooing your hair.

The other method which you can, you can simply try is to massage your scalp with a few teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with a little water. Wait for 5 minutes before rinsing it off.

For better results, apply this remedy for two to three times in a week.

Aloe Vera

The anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties of aloe vera not only provide cooling effect to the skin but also mildly exfoliates the skin.

You can simply apply aloe vera extract some from the aloe vera plant- it is transparent and has a thick consistency.

After applying this wait for at least 20 minutes and then washed off with a medicated anti-dandruff or any mild shampoo.

Olive Oil

Dry scalp can be cured with regular use of extra-virgin olive oil, the best herbal moisturizer.

Massage your scalp with lukewarm extra virgin olive oil and then wrap your hair in a warm towel.

Leave it on for at least 45 minutes or overnight and then shampoo and condition your hair.

For better results quickly, repeat this remedy a few times a week.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of the best home treatments for dandruff. Due to presence of acetic acid in vinegar it prevents growth of fungi on hair scalp and relieves itching.

Add one-half cup of vinegar to two cups of water. Wash your hair with this water after shampooing your hair.

The other best option is to massage your scalp with a mixture of two parts white vinegar, one part olive oil and three parts water. After 10 minutes, wash it off and shampoo your hair using a mild shampoo or antidandruff shampoo.

Follow either of these remedies once or twice a week.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has amazing antifungal properties which make it a good treatment for dandruff.

Just add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo when you wash your hair. You can add one drop of tea tree oil per ounce of shampoo.

You can also dilute the oil by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil. Apply this oil on your hair, wait for at least 30 minutes or overnight and then rinse your hair. You can use this home remedy once or twice a week.

Fenugreek Seeds

One thing that is easily available in our kitchen that can help in controlling dandruff to a great extent is fenugreek seeds.

Make a paste of overnight water soaked fenugreek seeds in water. Now add a few teaspoons of plain yogurt to this.

Apply the paste all over your scalp and leave it in for a few hours.

Wash it out with mild shampoo.

Do this once or twice a week.
